What is Antigravity (AGY) 2.0?
Antigravity (AGY) is Google DeepMind’s engineering platform built for Advanced Agentic Coding. Unlike first-generation AI code assistants that rely on passive single-prompt inline autocompletion, Antigravity 2.0 operates as an Autonomous State Engine.
It pairs software engineers with an autonomous AI partner capable of multi-file dependency inspection, atomic diff application, local environment perception, and end-to-end continuous verification.
Architectural Topology
Antigravity 2.0 is decoupled into four distinct operating layers: Host Execution, Protocol Isolation, Context Reasoning, and Developer Interaction.

Key Engineering Innovations
1. Dual-Lane Tool Routing (Eager vs. Lazy MCP)
Traditional LLM agent platforms register all available tools directly into the primary prompt context at boot time. This naive approach squanders thousands of valuable tokens before the user types a single word.
Antigravity 2.0 solves this via a tiered tool resolution protocol:
- Eager Tools (Resident Core): Lightweight, high-frequency atomic operations (POSIX command execution, precise file diffing, fast ripgrep directory traversal). These tools remain permanently resident in the agent reasoning loop with zero schema negotiation overhead.
- Lazy Tools (Sidecar MCP): Domain-specific sidecars exposed via the Model Context Protocol (such as ActKite Chrome DOM traversal or Cua-Driver desktop accessibility manipulation). The agent inspects tool schemas on demand only when a task specifically requires them, slashing initial prompt token consumption by over 78%.
2. Reactive Event Loop Wakeup
When coordinating long-running background tasks (such as npm dependencies installation, Docker image compilations, or browser automated testing), conventional agents waste API tokens in repetitive sleep loops repeatedly asking “is it done yet?”.
Antigravity 2.0 replaces polling with Event-Driven Reactive Wakeup:
- Once an asynchronous command is dispatched, the agent safely suspends its reasoning turn.
- The host supervisor monitors standard streams and OS process exits.
- Upon process termination, error signals, or timer expiration, a high-priority system notification automatically reactivates the agent to inspect output and resume execution.
3. Layered Customization Roots
To prevent rule conflicts across repositories, Antigravity enforces hierarchical configuration boundaries:
- Global Customizations Root (
~/.gemini/config): Holds cross-project system rules, global skills, and standard plugins. - Workspace Customizations Root (
.agents/in the project root): Contains repository-specific skills, style guidelines, and project sidecar MCP configurations.
Verifying Your Local Environment
Verify that the Antigravity 2.0 runtime is active and healthy in your terminal:
